Parents' questions about 11+, 13+ and Hongwen

Which exam will my child sit?
That depends on the school. Each school chooses its own test. Our schools page links to each entrance page, and our exams guide explains the two tests we cover in detail.

When should we start?
Dates vary. In the 2026 cycle many London 11+ schools opened registration in the autumn of Year 6, and 13+ routes often register a year or two earlier. Check each school's page, and start building vocabulary and reading habits early.

Can you guarantee a place?
No. Nobody can: schools decide who they offer places to. We help your child prepare well and understand what the exam asks.

Is the teaching in Chinese?
Explanations are in clear English with Simplified Chinese beside them, so the whole family can follow. Grammar is shown against how the same idea is said in Chinese.

How do you teach vocabulary?
A word counts as known only when your child uses it correctly in a sentence of their own. Seeing a word or picking it from a list is not enough.

What are the learning tools?
Five tools are in development: flashcards, a vocabulary organiser, a storybook maker, a paper reader and a test generator. They share one record of the words your child has really learnt. Pupil and parent areas are opening soon.

Is my child's information safe?
Children will sign in with a made-up user name, and we do not store a child's real name. Parents see every word learnt and every story written. See our children's privacy page for details.

Do I need to send my child's name when I first get in touch?
No. A first message only needs your child's age and the schools you have in mind.

Is Hongwen connected to ISEB, Quest or any school?
No. Hongwen is an independent tutoring service and is not affiliated with any exam board or school.
